During the Summer Research experience students work in close conjunction with a professor to research a mutually interesting question. The topic of this research was adaptation, especially the adaptation of literary works into films. Johan Espinal and Dr. Tim Scepansky analyzed many works in the public domain and then picked works that would be beneficial for an adaptation to a screen play. For this project we focused on adapting short stories into short films because of the constraints of time and budget. One short film was produced from an adapted screen play which was adapted from Ernest Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants. The short film and findings were presented at a symposium in a presentation titled Adaptation: The Esthetics of the Written Word in the Visual Medium (poster pictured above).
